TE PUKE RELIEVE UNITED INDIANS OF THE CHALLENGE PRIZE IN CLASSIC BUILDERS RESERVE GRADE ACTION
The Don Warner Challenge trophy, contested within the Classic Builders Reserve Grade competition, is becoming a poisoned challis with just one successful defence after seven rounds of play.
Te Puke came from the bottom of the standings to comprehensively defeat the current Don Warner trophy holder, United Indians, on Saturday (11 December 2021).
United Indians batted first and were bowled out for 139. Ranjit Rai and Amrit Singh top scored with 30 runs - with Te Puke bowler Christian MacDonald in fine fettle, taking four wickets for 29 runs. Te Puke wasted little time in getting home losing just two wickets. Chris Rowe led the way with a well crafted 65, off 112 balls, while Christian MacDonald backed up his bowling with an unbeaten 47 runs.
R&A Sangha batsman Yogesh Kumar anchored his sides total of 256/7, in smacking 115 runs against Katikati, at Fergusson Park. Katikati made a determined effort for victory with their reply restricted to 233 for the loss of eight wickets. Jayden Fairweather top scored for the hosts with a gritty 60 runs
Aquinas College, also upset a team that sat above them on the points ladder, in a short and sharp encounter with Hawks. The Aquinas bowlers ripped through Hawks batting lineup, to remove them for 89, before posting a three wicket victory. Luca Adsett took three wickets at a cost of just 18 runs.
Tauranga Boys College had a good tussle against Papamoa, before emerging with a hard fought nine run win, with Cadets beating Greerton by 69 runs.
Hawks will meet Te Puke Blue in the Classic Builders B Grade First Round title decider next weekend, after they finished at the top of the standings in their respective pools of play, after results were tallied on Saturday evening.
Hawks overwhelmed Greerton with a 244 run victory. The defending B Grade First Round titleholders, reached 341 for six wickets in their forty overs. Mayank Saini smacked an unbeaten 115 with Jasvir Dhillon reaching 91 before being dismissed. The Greerton batsmen came and went in quick succession as they were skittled for 97.
Te Puke Blue booked their finals berth against Hawks, in beating TBC 4th XI, with six wickets to spare. Tauranga Boys were bowled out for 117 before Amritpal Bopari led his team to the win points on the line with 38 not out.
