HOWZAT - Week Three
Week three of the 2022-23 cricket season, saw the Classic Builders Reserve Grade Don Warner Challenge trophy on the line for the first time in the regular season. Papamoa Kings, had holders Cadets on the back foot for much of their innings with the hosts at the Tauranga Domain bowled out for 127.
With black clouds of inclement weather lurking around the CBD, there was some urgency in the Papamoa reply, when they went out to bat. A rain delay in the ninth over, with the Kings at 61 for the loss of one wicket, saw the target reset to 65 off 22 overs.
There was plenty of action, with the Cadets bowlers desperate for wickets, with Papamoa getting home in the fourteenth over with six wickets to spare, to claim the WBOPCA Challenge prize. Papamoa Kings will have little time to celebrate, with the Kings putting the Don Warner prize on the line against Greerton, at the Papamoa Cricket fortress at the Alice Johnson Oval next Saturday.
A measured approach from Te Puke Blue Division One batter, Mayank Tandon, at the start of his innings against Papamoa paid dividends, as he posted an unbeaten 113. His three figures included eighteen 4’s and one six, saw him finish with a strike rate of 144.87 (per hundred balls).
Experience in spades was on display at Pemberton Park, in Reserve Grade action, where Scott Drabble destroyed the Te Puke reply. Drabble outmuscled the Te Puke batsmen, who were chasing 261 to win – taking six wickets for just 20 runs, as the visitors were removed for a neat one hundred runs. Drabble will carry the mantle of the first six wicket bag of the season throughout the current cricket year.

SATURDAY’S CLASSIC BUILDERS WESTERN BAY SENIOR CRICKET HEADLINES
The road to the four Western Bay of Plenty Cricket Championship titles, got off to a mixed bag of rain affected matches and washed out encounters, in the WBOPCA First Round opening games on Saturday (29 October 2022).
The Classic Builders Reserve Grade challenge prize of the Don Warner trophy, changed hands on the opening day of the Reserve Grade title race, albeit decided by the Duckworth/Lewis formula for rain affected games.
Defending Don Warner holders, Otumoetai Cadets, batted first and were bowled out by Papamoa Kings in their 44th over. Marshall Flint top scored with a hard fought 30 runs. Vishnu Bansal and Girbur Singh did plenty of damage with the ball with three wickets each.
Papamoa Kings had a real urgency to hit out from the opening ball of their reply, by the gathering dark clouds, at the Tauranga Domain. The visitors reached were at 1/28 when rain delayed play after 9.2 overs, seeing a readjusted target of 65 off 22 overs, when play resumed. Reaching this target for the loss of 4 wickets, in the 14th over meant the Don Warner prize changed hands.
A remarkable performance by United Indians number eleven batsman propelled his side to a 62 run victory over Papamoa second eleven. Lakhwinder Bhatti blasted the ball to all corners of Fergusson Park, to post an unbeaten 73 from just 43 balls.
The Bhatti batting blitzkrieg took his side through to 248 all out. Papamoa made a valiant attempt to chase down the big target but we're restricted to 186/8. Opener Mark Divehall top scored with 66 with Pieter Osborne adding 37 runs.
Greerton batter Charles Williams, was also in blistering form with his willow weapon hammering 99 before falling one run short of three figures, as the Pemberton Park based side set Te Puke a 261 run target. Greerton Club legend Scott Drabble, ruined the Te Puke chase with six wickets at a cost of 20 runs, with Te Puke bundled out for 100.
