SIXTEEN TEAMS CHASE 2021-22 McNAUGHTON TROPHY

1 Dec

The Bay of Plenty Cricket McNaughton Trophy kicks off this Sunday (5 December 2021), with a full field of sixteen teams from throughout the Bay of Plenty, playing for what is regarded as the Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade championship.

The McNaughton Trophy, was presented by Te Puke’s McNaughton family for Reserve Grade competition in the Western Bay of Plenty region - with the first winner engraved on the Reserve Grade prize, being Te Puke High School in the 1986/87 season.

Around the start of the new Millennium, the McNaughton Trophy became a Bay of Plenty Cricket competition open to all Bay of Plenty Clubs Reserve Grade sides. At the time of writing, the (Rotorua) Central CC is the only side outside the Western Bay of Plenty, to have their name is engraved on the BOPCA McNaughton Trophy.

Today, the McNaughton Trophy competition is managed by Western Bay of Plenty Cricket on behalf of Bay of Plenty Cricket.

Last season, R&A Sangha added their fourth McNaughton title in six seasons, when beating Greerton Kings in the title decider. A century from GS Mahal, propelled the Sangha representatives to 270 for the loss of eight wickets. The Greerton Kings were restricted to 198/7, to hand the Sangha XI a 72 run win.

Three Bay of Plenty Lakeland region sides, have thrown their hat into the ring and lodged 2021-22 McNaughton Trophy entries.

Geyser City has drawn a tough first-up assignment, with a home game at Boord Park in the Sulphur City, against United Indians.  Formerly known as Sikh Sports, the Indian side ruled the roost in Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade cricket last season, winning both the First Round and Championship titles.

A Eastern Bay of Plenty team drawn from the ranks of the EBOP Cricket Club, travel to Blake Park in Mount Maunganui, to play a Mount Maunganui College side. The Lake Taupo CC second eleven, will have a early morning start in hitting the road leading to the Te Puke Domain, where they will play the home side.

Defending titleholders, R&A Sangha square off with Aquinas College, with 2018/19 champions Papamoa hosting Tauranga Boys College at the Alice Johnson Oval. A Western Bay traditional rivalry will resume, with Greerton at home at Pemberton Park to Cadets, Mount Maunganui travel to Moore Park to play Katikati while Hawks take on the Te Puke B Grade team.
