PAPAMOA UPSET MOUNT MAUNGANUI IN CLASSIC BUILDERS RESERVE GRADE ACTION

Hard as rock grass wickets and lightning out-fields, produced a day of big scores and the upset of the season, in Classic Builders Reserve and B Grade competition on Saturday (22 January 2022).

Papamoa went into their Reserve Grade First Round competition against unbeaten Mount Maunganui, as heavy underdogs. Batting first, Papamoa posted a solid 196 for the loss of eight wickets. Stuart Farquhar top scored with 45 runs with Mount bowler Gus Tustin taking three wickets.

Keagan Bromilow, served it up to the Mount batters taking out four top and middle order batsmen at a cost of 36 runs. The encounter was on a knife edge before the Papamoa bowling attack prevailed, with Mount Maunganui bowled out five runs short of their target with the first ball of the 49th over.

Papamoa retained the Don Warner Challenge trophy, which was gifted to them in the judicial room during the week. The challenge trophy holders get little to me to savor their success, with Papamoa put the trophy on the line next weekend, against Cadets at Papamoa HQ at the Alice Johnson Oval.

Te Puke returned to winning form with a vengeance, when they posted 300 runs in their matchup against Tauranga Boys College. Denym Clarke was in sterling form in top scoring with 93 runs while Robert Ward contributed a solid 71. Ward continued his form with bat to grab four wickets for 16 runs, as Tauranga Boys College were removed for 178.

United Indians cemented second place on the standings with an easy victory over Greerton. The Indian side belted 218, then bowled their opponents out for 137 to claim an 81 run win.

Cadets re-inked third spot on the standings after posting 260/9 against Hawks and then bowling them out for 188. R&A Sangha defeated Aquinas College with seven wickets to spare.

The first round of the B Grade Plate produced plenty of action with two batsmen bursting through the three figure barrier. The highest score of the weekend was belted by Te Puke Green batting ace, Karan Singh, who blasted 134 runs in his sides 305/8 against TBC 4th XI. Gurjant Singh then mesmerized his opponents with the ball, grabbing six wickets at a cost of 15 runs as the TBC side were rolled for 88. Bay Blasters cruised to an eight wicket victory over Albion with Jithin Karuveli belting an unbeaten 122.

Defending  B Grade champions Hawks defeated  R& A Sangha in an Indian ethnic team derby. The Sangha XI set their opponents a target of 182 with Hawks reaching their goal with four wickets in hand. Other B Grade Championship contenders to post first up victories, saw TBC 3rd XI reach 249 all out then remove Cadets for 100, PapaOMA’s get past Mount Maunganui and Te Puke Blue defeated Grasshoppers.
