WEEKLY WRAP OF WESTERN BAY SENIOR CRICKET

Week Twenty-One – 27 March

The last day of the 2020-21 cricket season, saw two outstanding feats confirmed as seasons best.

The final Top Dog of the season, were claimed by Te Puke premier batsmen Devon Surrurier with 94 runs against Tauranga Boys College, with Te Puke Reserve bowler Bibin Babu finishing with 5/23 in his sides match with the Tauranga Boys College second eleven.

AROUND THE TRAPS – 27 March 2021

Current Season B Grade front-runner, Hawks, easily took out the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket B Grade Championship title, after posting what looked to be a very gettable score against Papamoa Wanderers.

Hawks batted first and were bowled out for what looked to be a modest 120 runs. Harry Singh top scored with a hard fought 42 runs, while Wanderers bowlers Chris Uden and Sarn Lee continued their season form with the ball, with the pair each taking three wickets.

The Papamoa reply turned into a rout, as they were rolled for just 39, to hand the Hawks XI an unlikely 81 run win. The Papamoa sides top score of just 11 runs told of their tale of woe. Rana Virk returned the outstanding figures of four wickets at a cost of just four runs, while Gopi Singh also did plenty of damage, taking four wickets for 13 runs.

Sikh Sports were handed the Reserve Grade Championship title, without facing a ball, after their opponents in R&A Sangha were disqualified for breaching a match day rule.

Te Puke cruised to the Reserve Grade Consolation title in defeating Tauranga Boys College. Te Puke posted 298 for the loss of seven wickets. Ryan Crossley top scored with 61 with Keaton Taylor belting a half century. Denym Clarke (47) and Calem Taylor (34) also made solid contributions to their sides big total.

Bibu Babu 5/23 and Calem Taylor 4/8 did the damage with the ball, in the Te Puke big 297 run win.

Multiple B Grade titleholder Grasshoppers won another Western Bay Cricket trophy after they dispatched TBC Blue in the B Grade Consolation, in a game that finished in mid-afternoon. The Tauranga Boys College representatives were dispatched for 81, with Jean Roux top scoring with 35, while long-time Hoppers bowler Wayne Anderson grabbing four wickets for just eight runs.

Grasshoppers took little time to wrap up the B Grade Consolation title, losing just two wickets on the way. Bon Curran (26) and Chris Savage (24no) got their side home with little sweat.
