178 RUN STAND TAKES CENTRE STAGE

 178 RUN PARTNERSHIP TOOK CENTRE STAGE IN THE CLASSIC BUILDERS B GRADE FIRST ROUND COMPETITION

 A 178 partnership from Hawks B Grade openers Jasvir Dhillon and Kulwinder Singh, batted Albion out of the match, at Fergusson Park on Saturday (30 October 2021). The defending B Grade champions belted 295 for the loss of eight wickets, in their forty overs at the crease.

Jasvir Dhillon top scored with 105 off 121 balls, with Kulwinder Singh accelerating the total with 103 runs, at a strike rate of 143 (per one hundred balls). Rodney Henderson troubled the Hawks middle order taking 4/46, as they lost their last five wickets for 30 runs.

Albion were on the back foot and at 66 for the loss of four wickets, were in some strife. Shane Espitalier shone out like a beacon with 41 runs in Albion’s turn at bat, before they were dismissed for 132. 

Te Puke Green posted the biggest winning margin of the B Grade round one, in beating Greerton by 196 runs. Two half centuries provided by Te Puke's Kala Singh and Sodhi set the stage for their side to post 236. 

Greerton were rolled for 40, with the Hawks emphatic win coming with the fifth ball of the 18th over. Prabhjot Singh returned 3/5, with Sukhpreet Singh (2/4) and Malkit Mann 2/8) also grabbing wickets with little resistance. 

A feature of the day was the two victories by the Tauranga Boys College B Grade entrants. The TBC third eleven set Mount Maunganui a target of 112 before bowling them out for 72. The TBC fourths, removed Bay Blasters for a neat century then got home with six wickets in hand. 

Defending Reserve Grade titleholders United Indians, had a good tussle with Katikati before prevailing with three wickets to spare. The team from the Western Bay extremities batted first and posted 119 for nine wickets. Former Bay of Plenty representative player, Brody Gilroy, top scored with an unbeaten 30 runs. Gurjant Singh was in top form with the ball, with four wickets for 18 runs from his 7.2 overs.

United Indians made a respectable start, at 39/1, when Sukdeep Sidhu was dismissed for his sides top score of 31. The Katikati bowlers upped the ante and at 50/4 had the Indian side in some trouble. Harbinger Ohaliwal turned the momentum, with 30 at tick over a run a ball, with United Indians reaching their target in the 32nd over. Jacob Morton returned figures of four wickets for 43 runs with the ball.

Other Reserve Grade side to take maximum points, were Mount Maunganui, R&A Sangha, Papamoa and Cadets apicking up the twenty points on offer.
