Coaching Resources
Anyone can coach. You might be a current cricketer, a past player, a parent, a teacher, or a fan. Coaching is a great way to express your passion for cricket. It can be extremely satisfying when you can positively influence the people you are engaged with. If you are currently coaching or interested in coaching junior cricket in the Western Bay of Plenty, firstly - thank you very much!
There are a range of ways we can support you on your coaching journey...
If you are interested in gaining any formal coaching qualifications, these are available for all levels of coaching, from the youngest softball cricketers, through to high-performing adult teams. A description of each qualification can be found below. Please email wbopca@gmail.com if you would like to participate in any of these courses.

Foundation Coaching Course
Who is this for?
Anyone working with beginner cricketers and/or coaching Division 10 and 9 teams.
What will you learn?
- How to create safe and positive learning environments

How is this course taught?
A combination of one face-to-face session plus online learning modules for you to complete in your own time.

No this course is completely free to participate in.

Advanced Foundation Coaching Course
Who is this for?
Anyone working with hardball cricketers in Years 5/6/7/8 and those coaching in Division 7 and 8.
What will you learn?
This course will give you the knowledge you need to understand the key differences between coaching softball cricket and coaching hardball cricket.

How is this course taught?
A combination of one face-to-face session plus online learning modules for you to complete in your own time.

No this course is completely free to participate in.

Development Coaching Course
Who is this for?
Anyone working with secondary school aged cricketers and coaches of representative youth teams. This includes anyone coaching:
- Division 5
- Sunday League
- U15/U16/U17 Bay of Plenty Representative teams
- School Junior 1st XI or Colts teams
What will you learn?
This course will give you the knowledge you need to create skilled, cohesive and engaged cricket teams.

- Coaching Holistically
- Building Team Culture
- Working With Parents
- Integrating Mental Skills
- Developing Your Coaching Philosophy
- Planning
How is this course taught?
This course involves:
- 1x face-to-face session
- 2x webinar sessions
- Multiple compulsory and option online modules for you to work through in your own time
You also need to complete 50 hours of coaching and be observed by a Coach Developer to acheive this qualification.
Is there a cost for this course?
There is sometimes a cost for this course but generally we aim to subsidise this as much as possible.

Advanced Development Course
Who is this for?
Anyone working with adult and older Secondary School aged players. Those that are coaching teams such as:
Club Coaches - Adult Teams
School 1st XI's
U19 Bay of Plenty Representative Teams
What will you learn?
- Coaching Adults
- Advanced Skills Learning
- Player-led Environments
- Observation, Questioning, and Feedback
- Integrating Mental Skills
- Self-reflection
- Season Planning
How is this course taught?
This course involves:
- 2x face-to-face session
- 3x webinar sessions
- Multiple compulsory and option online modules for you to work through in your own time
You also need to complete 75 hours of coaching and be observed by a Coach Developer to acheive this qualification.
Is there a cost for this course?
There is sometimes a cost for this course but generally we aim to subsidise this as much as possible.

Safeguarding and Registration Requirements
All coaches and people working closely with children and young people within cricket in Western Bay of Plenty and New Zealand as a whole must be registered and police vetted. Full PDF guidelines for the Welfare of Children and Vulnerable Adults can be viewed below.

Even if you have already been registered in the past, a new registration is required every year and police vetting every three years.
